The Case For Arne Slot
FSG are likely to be more willing to afford time to the Dutchman than most owners
Given the run of form that Liverpool have been on in recent weeks then it is entirely justified that head coach Arne Slot should come under greater scrutiny.
The weekend loss at Brentford was the fourth Premier League loss in a row for the Reds, something which is just completely unacceptable for Liverpool Football Club, at any time, in any era. In all competitions it is now six defeats out of the last seven games after a youthful Reds squad were handed a 3-0 home reverse against Crystal Palace in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday evening, the third time this season that the South London side had the number of Slot’s men. We are only in October.
But whatever happened on Wednesday, it wasn’t going to be the straw that broke the camel’s back for Slot, but the Dutchman does find himself under intense pressure after their exit from the competition.
As someone who has reduced the amount of time they spend on social media considerably, a quick dive back into ‘X’ this past week has shown social media sentiment among plenty of accounts to be pretty low. Wednesday did not help matters, although in normal circumstances the decision to play a vastly weakened team in a competition that doesn’t hold enormous importance for Liverpool right now would be understandable.
Calls for the sack are commonplace in football, a few defeats here and a poor performance there is enough to have owners shelling out millions in compensation then left with the very challenging process of identifying candidates who can address the issues immediately and come in and make sweeping changes to get clubs back to winning the whole lot.
But trigger happy owners who lose the thread of the long-term picture rarely make good decisions. Having narrowly missed out on the Champions League on the last day of last season, Nottingham Forest have already burned through two managers in Nuno Espirito Santo and Ange Postecoglou and are now on Sean Dyche. It is hardly something that points to a strategic way of working.
